It was a long day of basketball to say the least. I showed up at the Lahaina Civic Center at 10 a.m. and didn’t leave until after 9 p.m. I’ll try to give you as coherent a recap as I can, given the fact that I’m dead freaking tired and have already written a total of about 10,000 words about basketball so far today.
Rather than just give you a bland recap of all the day’s happenings, I’m going to give you a bit of a photo-based recap of the games. Enjoy.
No. 7 Texas 68, St. Joseph’s 50.
I'm not exaggerating when I say this place is smaller than my high school gym.
Phil Martelli is a great guy, but he needs to mix in a salad every once in a while if he wants to avoid being the new Rick Majerus.
Hey it's ESPN's Jimmy Dykes.
A.J. Abrams led all scorers with 17 points.
World Series Champion Shane Victorino was in attendance.
Rick Barnes' team held St. Joe's to just 29 percent shooting from the field.
No. 8 Notre Dame 88, Indiana 50.
ESPN's stellar anchor team prepping before the game.
Indiana head coach Tom Crean enjoys the refreshing tast of Coca-Cola.
All-American Luke Harangody did not have his best game. He finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds.
Indiana freshman sharpshooter Matt Roth was off all game long.
Notre Dame coach Mike Brey was impressed with how hard Crean's Hoosiers played.
No. 1 North Carolina 115, Chaminade 70.
ESPN's Bill Raftery enjoyed talking to anyone and everyone between games.
The poor Chaminade fans (in white) were dwarfed by the North Carolina contingent.
Tyler Hansbrough was less than happy to be sitting out the game.
Roy Williams made an interesting fashion choice with that shirt.
Oregon 92, Alabama 69.
Ronald Steele managed to make it through the game without injuring either of his knees.
After nearly killing me on a free throw attempt Sunday morning, I was worried Oregon coach Ernie Kent would try again.
I can't possibly describe the level of contempt I have for Ed Hightower.
Apparently Alabama coach Mark Gottfried agrees with me.
Hey remember when we were wondering what the worst color in the world was? I think we've found our answer.
And that’s all for day one from Maui.
