College Football Roundup: This Week Didn’t Even Matter

November 17, 2008 – 12:15 pm by TheRiot

Nothing like damn near the end of the season to start a college football roundup eh? Well, you know, we operate on our own schedule around here. Sometimes it’s just a little slow.

But yeah, the BCS standings basically remained the same, at least where it’s most important. That’s what you really need to know. So anyway, let’s dive in with our ten most important games of the weekend, shall we?

No. 1 Alabama 32, Mississippi State 7: The first game off the bat tells you everything you need to know about this weekend. The top of the BCS standings stayed the same because the big dogs rolled. Javier Arenas ran a punt back 80 yards for a touchdown to electrify the joint, but in general it was just a grinding SEC win for the Tide.

Up next: The regular season finale against Auburn in the Iron Bowl. Auburn’s won something like the last six. Anyone really think that’s gonna happen again?

No. 4 Florida 56, No. 25 South Carolina 6: OK, now just about everybody knows the Gators are easily playing the best football in the country right now. Seriously. Look at the score. So here’s the BCS scenario: Texas Tech loses to Oklahoma this week. Florida puts a beating on the Tide in the SEC championship game. Everybody has one loss. What happens?

No. 3 Texas 35, Kansas 7: Yawn. Colt McCoy threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 78 yards with another score. Talk about doing the job almost by yourself. The good news for Kansas: They’re bowl eligible at 6-5 and basketball season is upon us.

No. 6 USC 45, Stanford 23: Yeah, the Cardinal made it interesting for awhile. But did we really expect anything less than a blowout? And honestly, is there a bigger douche in college football than Jim Harbaugh? First he blew off Jimmy Clausen’s handshake in the South Bend (OK, we know what you’re thinking, but just shake the guy’s hand) and now he and Pete Carroll have an Eric Mangini-to-Bill Belichick type thing going on. Seriously, grow up. Count Chocula.

No 7 Utah 63, San Diego State 14: Is this game worth of being our 10 most important? Maybe not. But along with Boise State, which rolled over Idaho 45-10, the Utes are a potential BCS buster. And they’re doing it in the much tougher Mountain West. Respect.

No. 23 Oregon State 34, Cal 21: You know, this is interesting. Since the Beavers upset USC earlier in the season they control their own destiny to the Rose Bowl. Meanwhile, the Trojans could roll into the national championship game if some things break right. Strange times in the Pac 10.

Any game in the ACC: Check out the ACC standings. What a mess. We may never know whether it’s parity or mediocrity, but one of these teams has to play in a BCS game, unfortunately. This weekend alone The U beat Virginia Tech, Maryland upset No. 16 North Carolina, Boston College upset No. 19 Florida State and NC State toppled No. 24 Wake Forest. Good God. Somebody’s gotta take control and win the thing. And for the record, we have no idea which team.

No. 14 Ball State 31, Miami (Ohio) 16: This was to be expected. Nate Davis, Miquale Lewis and the Cardinals just keep doing it. A big matchup looms this week against Dan LeFevour and Central Michigan. Should be interesting. Can Ball State crack the BCS? Probably not. But it’d be damn fun if they could.

Northwestern 21, Michigan 14: Yeah, this game has no real implications of any sort at this point. Then again, it’s now officially the worst season in Michigan football history. Pretty fantastic stuff. Let’s hope the unpatient and unrealistic fans up there give Rich Rod a chance to rebuild the thing.

No. 20 LSU 40, Troy 31: Under different circumstances we’d read this score and go “Wow, Troy really hung with ‘em.” Wrong. Troy totally gave this game away. In the end, the talent won out, but Troy led 31-3 early in the third quarter. Yeah, 37 consecutive points later (30 of which came in the fourth quarter) and the Tigers escaped. Funny, that one.
