It Turns Out Washington-Notre Dame Means Very Little

There was a time when this game seemed like it was going to matter. But when Notre Dame travels allll the way out to Seattle this weekend to face Washington, well, most people aren’t going to care.

Here’s the thing. Notre Dame unceremoniously fired Washington head coach Tyrone Willingham four years ago. Notre Dame fanatics still hate the guy and still love to bash him. Sad but true.

So, when this game popped up on the schedule, Ty Bowl was supposed to be one of two things depending on your perspective: A chance for Ty to put a whooping on his old team and get some vengeance for the way he was fired or a chance for Charlie Weis to lower the hammer while all the Notre Dame fans revel in the fact that they have a better coach now.

As we stand Notre Dame is rebounding from one of its worst seasons ever and Washington is mired in an awful 0-6 season. Not exactly the thing of which enormous television ratings are made.

Give this some thought though: Ty won’t make it through the season either way, but wouldn’t it be ironic if a home loss to Notre Dame was the straw that broke the camel’s back and they ushered him out of town afterward?

We’d get a good chuckle out of it. No doubt about that.
