RIP Evan Tanner (1971-2008)

Just wanted to take a minute to mention the passing of MMA fighter Evan Tanner. His name might not be known to those who aren’t superfans of MMA, but this is a truly sad moment for everyone involved, even just as a fan. Tanner was just 37 years old.

Tanner just fought a few weeks ago as the main event at the finale of The Ultimate Fighter Season 7 and lost to Kendall Grove. But the effect of Tanner on the MMA world was by no means limited to his ring experience. The former UFC middleweight champion (he is the man Rich Franklin beat to be come middleweight champ) was one of the most well-liked fighters in the organization.

It’s a sad twist of fate Tanner would die as his MMA career was winding down. He was 37 years old and the world of UFC may have passed him by, but this isn’t a story about a washed up fighter. This Yahoo! article and this Fox Sports article talks a lot about what kind of guy he was outside of the octagon, where he had more of an impact that many of the top fighters today. Go here to see the memories of those who knew him posted at his personal site.
