This Bud’s For You

It was the best match in the history of tennis. It’s entertainment value far exceeded that of “Godfather.” Cancer patients who watched the Wimbledon final were cured. Even Chuck Norris wept.

The match was so good Bud Collins got hard without thinking about “Velvet Goldmine” or using Viagra.

You get the point. Every tennis pundit and fan out there has lauded hyperbolic praise left and right for this past weekend’s Wimbledon final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. I myself, an ardent tennis fan (I long for the days of Aaron Krickstein and Stefan Edberg) missed the match.

I set the DVR to record and even extended an hour to NBC’s scheduled broadcast just in case. The weather was beautiful, so naturally I laid by the pool and drank Budweiser Selects all day. It was there I learned the match extended well past the 3 p.m. EST time I had set the DVR to stop recording. I was told there were rain delays and five sets. Imagine my disappointment, especially when the fella at the pool said, “Best match ever!”

So I watched what I had recorded. Then was left scrapping for fourth and fifth set snippets on SportsCenter. Luckily, the people at ESPN Classic came through with an encore presentation.

I’ll tell you what. I love the pool, and perhaps more importantly Bud Select, but damn I wish I watched this match live. But you can’t cry over spilled carb-free beer.

I’ll have to wait for the U.S. Open next month.
