Fresno State: It’s Been a Great Run

June 24, 2008 – 12:01 am by admin

I know, I know, it’s not over yet. But I’m going out on a limb and officially pronouncing Fresno State’s wonderful run to the College World Series Finals dead. It’s been fun.

Georgia used a four-run eighth inning — two of which came on a home run by stud shortstop and White Sox first round pick Gordon Beckham — to come from behind, beat Fresno 7-6 and take the first game in a best-of-three series to crown college baseball’s champion.

I wouldn’t usually be so rash and declare a series over. I mean, it’s not so hard to string together two wins in a row. But after watching the way Fresno played, I think Georgia sustained its best shot.

Fresno had the lead despite pitching some of its least experienced guys, a bunch of injured guys came through with big home runs and hits and they couldn’t hold off a talent-laden Georgia.

It also didn’t help that Georgia closer Joshua Fields came in throwing fastballs between 96 and 98 m.p.h. I wouldn’t be surprised if he made his debut with the Mariners before this season is out.

Anyway, an early congratulations to Georgia. Please don’t make me look like an ass.
