Being that the four of us own diplomas from Indiana University and three of us covered the Men’s basketball team for America’s Best College newspaper, we’ve got some sources close to the program. These various sources often give us a heads up when something big is going down concerning our beloved alma mater. If you remember something we rarely like to mention around here (sarcasm should be dripping off the screen at that one), we got an early tip on a huge story a while back.
As for the big Kelvin Sampson announcement coming today our sources are all over it. They’ve given us great info and we’re here to share it with you. Yes, prepare yourself for some big time breaking news. Here goes: Nobody knows anything!
Oh we’re getting different reports, but they all contradict each other. That’s not to say our sources are out of the loop or aren’t reliable, it just goes to prove what we Indiana fans have come to learn over the past few years – Rick Greenspan plays everything incredibly close to the vest.
One very reliable source told us that last nights meeting with the players was simply Greenspan telling them not to believe everything they’ve been reading. That was backed up by this report today.
Another informant told us that as the decision date drew closer the administration was backing off firing Sampson and instead was leaning towards an indefinite suspension to investigate matters further. He claimed that last night’s meeting was to let the players know Dan Dakich would likely coach the team this Saturday at Northwestern and was a chance for Greenspan to let them know the administration’s side of things.
Yet another person we trust just emailed me and said the decision wasn’t made until this morning and that Sampson is gone.
The thing is, all of these sources are directly connected with the situation. It’s not a “I know a guy who knows a guy” kind of thing. They are “the guy.” So this is all the more shocking to us.
Now look, we trust all of these people because of their track records with us, but it’s pretty apparent that no one knows just what the hell is going on here. Luckily I didn’t have to meet any of them in an abandoned parking structure. But I’ve heard from tons of other people connected in some way to this scenario and I’ve heard everything from the administration vowing to keep Sampson on through the year and fight these charges, to them deciding last Friday that he was gone. It’s crazy. I haven’t seen a story like this in a long time.
As of now, here’s what I know for sure. No press conference has been scheduled so far and we’ll keep you updated on what goes down. I was planning on going to any press conference that took place (again, “I know a guy”) unless it happens too late, since I have some day job responsibilities tonight (namely, driving across the state in a blizzard to cover a basketball game.)
Until then, we direct you to our friends at InsideTheHall since they’re on top of this thing as well. We’re sure they’ll have have all the latest as it develops.
UPDATE: The terminally misinformed Andy Katz – yes he of the Steve Alford to Indiana is a done deal! story – is reporting that Sampson’s fate has been determined by the administration and they are discussing it now. An announcement is coming later today.
UPDATE 2: Looks like a press conference will be held at 2 p.m. to make the announcement. Your’s truly will be in attendance.
UPDATE 3: I just got off the phone with IU Media Relations after hearing differing reports and there is in fact no press conference scheduled as of yet. I’ll keep you guys posted.
