Did Jeff Fisher Order A Code Red?

December 10, 2007 – 7:33 pm by McD

The Tennessee Titans are a dirty, dirty team that needs to be spanked. After winning 23-17, in Tennessee, accusations were flying out of the visiting locker room that Titans offensive players were intentionally trying to injure Pro Bowl Linebacker Shawne Merriman. Merriman left the game late in the first half with a knee injury that will keep him out of at least one game, possibly two, because he suffered an injury on what his teammates deemed was a dirty play. He was also the target of repeated cheap shot attempts by Titans players throughout the game.

“It was a real dirty play,” safety Marlon McCree said. “I’m sure our coaches will turn it in (to the league) and they (Titans players) should get fined for what they did. It was an unnecessary play, and I don’t think it’s called for in this game.”

Even worse, Jeff Fisher or another Titans’ coach called for Merriman to be injured: “A player or two told me that supposedly (one of the Titans’ coaches) told them to go after me,” said Merriman.

This all started because of an accidental collision between Merriman and Vince Young that left the quarterback with injured ribs. He did, however, come back in for the next offensive series. Titans fans and players were incensed by the injury and then started their aforementioned cheap-shots on Merriman. Young, however, didn’t believe the hit was intentional. The two players are friends and Young also said, “I don’t think Merriman tried to do that…it happens.”

Not only are the Tennessee players happy to try and end a guy’s career but apparently they do it on orders from their coaching staff. Not to sound like a total Chargers homer (which I of course am) but it seems like the Titans have a lot of pent up frustration to work out. They can’t beat the Colts in their own division, the Chargers destroyed them the last two times they played before this game, and it’s not like they’re talented enough to win games on their own anyway. Apparently they have to injure the opposition’s best players. Did I mention this isn’t the first time they’ve been accused of dirty play this season?

What’s even dumber about the Titans is that Merriman wasn’t even flagged for the hit on Young. So offensive linemen landed on Merriman’s neck and back repeatedly and then injured his knee, all because their precious quarterback (who happens to like leaving the pocket and running) got bumped into by a friend of his on accident and wasn’t even hurt that badly. As Ricky Hatton said, “this isn’t a tickling contest, is it?”

So thanks to the Titans for being gracious hosts on Sunday. Not only did they let the Chargers snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with their ineptitude but they’ve probably managed to get a couple of their guys fined in the process. Nice day’s work. Much better than actually hanging on and winning the game. I couldn’t sum this whole mess up any better than what Merriman said later in the same interview, so I’m letting #56 take over from here:

“That’s not the character of this team,” Merriman said. “We’re going to fight you to the end, regardless of what they do. There were a bunch of cheap shots out there, but they can get some cheap shots on the sofa at home while they watch us (in the playoffs).”

  2. Yeah. let’s defend the “Roider”.
Knocks our quarterback out (whether intentional or not) and then has to drag out his little fairy “Lights Out” dance after sacking our statue of a backup (ooooh sacking a stationary object)Merriman shouldn’t even be in the league anyway. Strqahan and others have said as much! I don’t think the rudest, most classless obnoxious fans (half of which are not legally here) have a right to point fingers at anyone!!!

  3. The rudest most classless obnoxious fans? I think you have us confused with Raider fans. And half of which aren’t legally here? Congressman Tancredo is that you?

  4. not to be a killjoy, but without the steroids i don’t really think Merriman is anywhere near the best player on the Chargers.

ps. the guy’s a total jerk and i think that the expression is, what goes around comes around, no?

  5. Merriman is a loser and a cheater. I truly hope that he gets a career ending injury. to go further I hope said injury makes him so depressed that he kills his family and then himself. This guy is truly a giant fucking asshole

  6. I hope MerrimanBlows contracts AIDS and gets hit by a bus on the way to the “free crap for people with AIDS” shelter, and then gets hit by a steam roller while he’s lying in the street wondering what number bus hit him.

  8. Wow this really escalated quickly…

  9. Apparently, people who like the Titans don’t take to well to people making fun of their over the top rants about a silly football game, but instead make up entirely new secret identities and post mean things about cancer survivors….

Ron: Boy, that escalated quickly. I mean that really got out of hand fast!

Brian: It jumped up a notch.

    Ron: It did, didn’t it?

Brick: Yea, I stabbed a man in the heart.

Ron: I saw that! Brick killed a guy. Did you throw a trident?

Brick: Yea, there were horses and a man on fire and I killed a guy with a trident.

Ron: Brick, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safe house or a relative close by because you’re probably wanted for murder.

  10. First of all, most of the people in our region here illegally are RAIDER fans, don’t get it twisted, but you wouldn’t know that because you’ve had your sorry ass stuck in minnesota or some damn place your whole life. How’s the weather up there by the way? It’s abou 65 and sunny here, i know i know, you can hate us for that too. Secondly i dont want to hear about dirty players. DONT YOU GUYS HAVE PIECE OF SHIT HAYNESWORTH?!?! I’d rather have a drug user than a punk who stabs people in the legs with his clete after a play is over. Talk about dirty. And you know what, i dont care about any of that intentional or unintentional garbage. The fact is that Fisher IS of the Buddy Ryan school which emphasizes “pay back” so it IS conceiveable, but that doesn’t change the fact that Merriman is a fuckin moron who needs to keep his mouth shut. It’s also equally true that he’s a very very good football player, and I’m glad he’s on our team. Finally the only thing that REALLY matters is that the Titans CHOKED ON OUR FATTYS AS WE SCHOOLED YOU ON HOW REAL TEAMS WIN IN THE FOURTH QUARTER! YOU LOST, HAVE FUN WATCHING THE PLAYOFFS FROM HOME, GO CRY ABOUT IT TITAN FANS YOU SUCK!! HAHAHAHAAHAH BITCH

  12. I don’t defend Haynesworth or Pac Man..never have. The damage that Haynesworth did was to one man and also to himself. STEROIDS COULD DAMAGE THE ENTIRE FREAKIN’ LEAGUE!!!(see Major Leauge Baseball)
Haynesworth should’ve been suspended the rest of the season..and the Titans did lower the boom on him financially and made him go to counseling AND none of the Titans players defended him or kissed his asssss like Lo Neal and the like try to act like Merriman never did nothin wrong and is a God or something.
FISHER SAID “GET AFTER THAT GUY”…that means BLOCK HIM and don’t let him run rampant!!! He got de-cleated AGAIN after Maurice Jones Drew LEVELED him and he’s embarrassed!!! Fisher is NOT Buddy Ryan…look at his body of work..he has respect of coaches/players/and executives around the league. Right now Michael Wilbon is talking about the obnoxious mouths on the charger players and you can’t truly buy what they’d say anyway.

Merrimans career is built on leveling people when they are not looking…because our tight end came around and BLOCKED him and nailed his ass in NOT dirty! Neither is keeping somebody down during a play so they can’t get back up, as Merriman is apt to do, and make a tackle.

P.S. I live in Nevada..not the snowy tundra of Minnesota..and the reason I speak of the fans is that I went to the 2004 Titan/charger game and was harrassed, called vicious names, and treated like shit in the parking lot BEFORE the game..it went WAY BEYOND the normal trash talk that fans give each other. I’ve been to plenty of games at plenty of stadiums and have never been treated like that. Granted I will never go to Oakland because I’d like to live through the freakin’ game!!

By chargerhater on Dec 11, 2007

  13. By the way Charger fan….how suck ass was your team when the Titans were going to Superbowls/AFC Championship games/and Divisional Playoffs and schooled and crushed alot of teams..including yours. WE WILL WIN OUR NEXT THREE GAMES AND WE WILL GET IN….Hope to see you guys again!

p.s. Get a new stadium PLEEEEEEASE!

By chargerhater on Dec 11, 2007

  14. I also didn’t know real teams win by onyl having one camera angle on a dropped 4th down catch or getting an extra 10 seconds at the end of the game so they can score with 9 seconds left….

  15. Hey even though you’re STILL just hating on us because we beat you FAIR AND SQUARE, I’ll give you you DO have some valid points. There’s NO excuse for steroids in football or ANY pro sport, but you’re kidding yourself if you dont think its everywhere in football. The drugs are ALWAYS ahead of the tests. We don’t have a test to check for HGH in pro football, you think those ultracompetitve football players are abstaining from potentially making millions based on wanting to “play fair?” I should think not. granted that does NOT mean i am making excuses for Merrimen. The guy has proven to be a first rate douche bag on more than one occassion and I have no love for him personally in the same way i would for say a guy like LT. That being said, he’s still a good football player and yes i WISH HE WOULD SHUT HIS MOUTH! But I’m still happy to have him on my team, and if you tell me you wouldn’t take him as one of your starting outside LB’s im gonna laugh you right off this blog. Just like despite my personal distaste for Haynesworth i would love to have him on my team because he’s a BEAST.

    On to the next point:

I agree also that Fisher is and always has been a class coach. I dont believe he intentionally wanted Merrimen hurt and as i said i wish Merrimen would shut the fuck up. My only point there was that you KNOW that Fisher either because he was ordered to or by choice HAS DONE THAT IN THE PAST when he was a defensive coach for Buddy Ryan. It’s been documented, I can send you old newspaper links if you dont believe me. So all i said was that it was CONCEIVEABLE.

    On to the next point:

Sorry if you had a bad experience in SD. I support badgering of opposing fans in our house but certainly not beyond a friendly/”in the spirit of the game” type of manner. If our fans went beyond that, hey I’m embarrassed on behalf of those fans but whataya gonna do? You mean to tell me you dont think any of those country bumpkins out in Tennessee have ever been over the top or innapropriate???? (see SLAVERY)

And please dont recall your history to me i know it already. That’s the same thing Raider fans say to me. History is great, but thats a different argument, we’re talking TODAY, and you can say what you want about what happened ten years ago, we’re a better team today. We beat you FAIR AND SQUARE. Don’t give me those bogus excuses. Oh boo hoo the ref didn’t agree with your take on the catch which by the way I thought was the right call. The ball is allowed to move so long as his arms are underneath it. That being said the rule is “indisputable evidence” to overturn a call and there clearly wasn’t any. The rules are the rules we beat you fair and square. Maybe if your fat out of shape running back had waited until the game was really out of reach before celebrating, he wouldn’t have looked so soft in the 4th, you guys might have converted one more first down and it would be a moot point. Or if you guys had managed to stop us on any one of a dozen crucial plays you still could’ve won the game. If you guys get in to the postseason more power to you, but i find it highly unlikely considering you play in the best division in football this year. Just the way it goes.

  16. P.S. They’re trying for a new stadium but i personally dont care. I have LOVED that stadium for sentimental reasons since i was a kid and it was still called jack murphy. I really dont care if outsiders like it or not. Its a native San Diegan thing, you wouldn’t understand. There’s something to be said for history. Being the fan of an organization thats a decade old i know you dont understand, but out here on the west coast we are decendent of the mighty AFL, and we honor and value our history, including our beat up rundown old pos stadium.

  17. I am a fan of history(I am a fan of a college football team that is one of the first in the country by the way, so maybe Tennessee hasn’t been around long, but I am a fan of other teams), and maybe that’s not the worst Stadium in the world, but it is a clusterf$%^k to get into from the street and God forbid you don’t get in the right parking section (which the parking map is fubar), because for some unfathomable reason, the parking sections are separated so that you have to go BACK out to the street into the snarling traffic and find your way BACK into the right section…WTF is that???? That started the day off bad and getting nasty sh&t from tail gaters made it worse. The people sitting around us were ok…but we were at the 45 yard line 19 rows up..so those were the more pricey seats..I just couldn’t believe how people acted in the parking lots and around the stadium.

What was with L.T. getting up in disgust when Rivers sat down next to him?? I like L.T. alot..and I give you that I don’t think LenWhale is the answer, but Vince WILL be a quarterback to be reckoned with, just like at Texas…he has a WILL that is second to none..HEART..and ATTITUDE..and the league adjusted to him this year, but HE will adjust and when all the pieces come together..and he gets some RECEIVRS…WATCH OUT. Good luck in the playoffs..I can see you are not the same type of filth that I ran into at the stadium. I love S.D. and make the 5 hour drive as often as I can. I’m sorry about those fires and how they are destroying Cal summer by summer. I wish the best for you all. Happy Holidays.

  19. I was at the game. It looked like a cheap shot from Merriman, who is about a million times more annoying in person. The next drive the Titans were targeting him, first with the crackback, then with someone on him every play. My friend and I were actually just watching Merriman to see what they would do to him next. Until he left the game. Is that cheap? I don’t think so, he put a hit on the QB, accidental or not, so he obvioulsy had a target on him. I thought the crackback was awesome. Merriman should be angry at his cornerback for not warning him. We learned that in middle school. You yell “CRACK!!!” to warn the DE or LB.

I used to like the chargers until this game. Not only are their stupid little dances annoying and lame, but they are the whiniest bunch of bitches I’ve ever listened to. No wonder NE felt like stomping on the logo after the playoff game. After a game with all that crap i would have done the same.

    Merriman is a whore anyway.

  20. I think you are exaggerating a bit. You say that Mr. Roidrage is out for a game or 2 and then say the titans are happy to end careers with dirty hits.
