The Tennessee Titans are a dirty, dirty team that needs to be spanked. After winning 23-17, in Tennessee, accusations were flying out of the visiting locker room that Titans offensive players were intentionally trying to injure Pro Bowl Linebacker Shawne Merriman. Merriman left the game late in the first half with a knee injury that will keep him out of at least one game, possibly two, because he suffered an injury on what his teammates deemed was a dirty play. He was also the target of repeated cheap shot attempts by Titans players throughout the game.
“It was a real dirty play,” safety Marlon McCree said. “I’m sure our coaches will turn it in (to the league) and they (Titans players) should get fined for what they did. It was an unnecessary play, and I don’t think it’s called for in this game.”
Even worse, Jeff Fisher or another Titans’ coach called for Merriman to be injured: “A player or two told me that supposedly (one of the Titans’ coaches) told them to go after me,” said Merriman.
This all started because of an accidental collision between Merriman and Vince Young that left the quarterback with injured ribs. He did, however, come back in for the next offensive series. Titans fans and players were incensed by the injury and then started their aforementioned cheap-shots on Merriman. Young, however, didn’t believe the hit was intentional. The two players are friends and Young also said, “I don’t think Merriman tried to do that…it happens.”
Not only are the Tennessee players happy to try and end a guy’s career but apparently they do it on orders from their coaching staff. Not to sound like a total Chargers homer (which I of course am) but it seems like the Titans have a lot of pent up frustration to work out. They can’t beat the Colts in their own division, the Chargers destroyed them the last two times they played before this game, and it’s not like they’re talented enough to win games on their own anyway. Apparently they have to injure the opposition’s best players. Did I mention this isn’t the first time they’ve been accused of dirty play this season?
What’s even dumber about the Titans is that Merriman wasn’t even flagged for the hit on Young. So offensive linemen landed on Merriman’s neck and back repeatedly and then injured his knee, all because their precious quarterback (who happens to like leaving the pocket and running) got bumped into by a friend of his on accident and wasn’t even hurt that badly. As Ricky Hatton said, “this isn’t a tickling contest, is it?”
So thanks to the Titans for being gracious hosts on Sunday. Not only did they let the Chargers snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with their ineptitude but they’ve probably managed to get a couple of their guys fined in the process. Nice day’s work. Much better than actually hanging on and winning the game. I couldn’t sum this whole mess up any better than what Merriman said later in the same interview, so I’m letting #56 take over from here:
“That’s not the character of this team,” Merriman said. “We’re going to fight you to the end, regardless of what they do. There were a bunch of cheap shots out there, but they can get some cheap shots on the sofa at home while they watch us (in the playoffs).”
