Who Will Save The Chargers?

November 12, 2007 – 8:17 pm by Ryan Phillips

Last night’s incredibly lucky 23-21 win over the Indianapolis Colts proved one thing, once and for all, for Chargers fans. Norv Turner’s ass needs to be fired. The rest of him too. And I don’t mean at the end of the season or at some point in the near future, I mean now, tonight, ASAP. During the fourth quarter last night, McD asked me if anyone had ever been fired on the field during a game and I replied, “I don’t think so, but we should start the trend.” He should have been fired before he left the field last night. End of discussion.

As the Chargers were in the process of nearly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, I was pondering ways I could deal with the searing pain in my head. When Vinatieri missed that field goal, I wasn’t even happy or relieved. I was still angry. Norv Turner “offensive genius” wasted six, (SIX!!!!) interceptions by a Charger defense that looked shell-shocked by the ineptitude of their offensive counterparts. They made Peyton Manning look like Rex Grossman after a fistful of Quaaludes, and still the offense nearly blew the game because of horrible play-calling and sloppy execution.

This is the exact same offense that led the NFL with 492 points last season, and Turner was the one who installed the offense back in 2004. And he’s supposed to be someone who makes offenses better. Guess what? That illusion is gone. He hasn’t made the offense better, he’s made the team worse. All the way around and everyone knows it. It took six interceptions, two return touchdowns and three amazing interceptions from Antonio Cromartie to save him last night. He has the best running back, tight end, and one of the best offensive lines in football and he’s done absolutely nothing with them. The team doesn’t even have confidence in him as a leader as evidenced by this honey of a column from Yahoo! Sports’ Michael Silver.

Yeah, he’s taken my team, my beautiful, near-perfect team, and crapped all over it. I hate Norv Turner. I’d never wish ill or harm on anyone, but for a large portion of last night’s game, he made me question that philosophy. I have nothing against the rest of the coaching staff, I really don’t. But Turner needs to go. Yesterday. I’ve never been in favor of supplanting a coach mid-season, but Norv has changed all of that. A.J. Smith, get his worthless ass away from my team before he poisons them further.
