Why Am I Not Surprised?

Rick Ankiel’s comeback story had everyone rooting for him. He always seemed like a good kid who had a horrible experience, lost his mind and was making a remarkable return to the big leagues. Well, now his return seems a little less miraculous. As virtually every blog is now likely reporting, Ankiel’s name surfaced Thursday in a huge steroids investigation centered around a Florida-based pharmacy.

According to The New York Daily News, the Cardinals right fielder received a 12-month supply of human growth hormone in 2004 from a Florida pharmacy that was part of a national illegal prescription drug distribution operation. The Daily News’ reporters saw clinical records and date they saw during the investigation. Ankiel’s prescriptions were signed by William Gogan, a Florida physician, who provided them through “The Health and Rejuvenation Center,” or “THARC,” a Palm Beach Gardens clinic.

To be clear, Ankiel has never been accused of any wrongdoing and according to the clinic’s records he stopped getting the HGH just before Major League Baseball banned the substance in 2005. Anyone known to have used or even possessed HGH would face a 50-game suspension, despite the fact that the MLB doesn’t test for it (because there is no effective test for it).

Seriously, this is awful. Even if he isn’t currently ‘roiding, we know he did at one point, which makes his return that much less magical and makes us feel dirty for rooting him on. Man steroids/performance enhancing drugs suck, this was the best story of the year, had Disney movie written all over it, and now its all shot to hell. When you take this, Barry broking Hank’s record and the revelation that Jessica Alba got the herps from Derek Jeter, the only thing that could make this last month and a half worse would be if it was suddenly revealed that Whitney from “The Hills” was actually a dude or something. I know it was you Rick. You broke my heart. You broke my heart! (This all feels eerily familiar…)
