The Philadelphia 76ers Hate Rex Grossman

February 7, 2007 – 2:34 am by Ryan Phillips

A few of the Philadelphia 76ers are a tad bitter about Rex Grossman’s Super Bowl struggles.

Steven Hunter is a 7-foot forward/center for the 76ers. He’s also a former first round pick out of DePaul, a Chicago native, a die-hard Bears fan and a hater of Grossman.

According to the Bucks County Courier Times, Hunter when asked whether or not he would ever break out his Rex Grossman Bears jersey he had this to say, “I’m not ever wearing that jersey again.”

He went on to analyze what the Bears should have done during their 29-17 Super Bowl loss to the Colts. “He could’ve proved a lot of people wrong. I think we should’ve put (backup QB) Brian Griese in. We need to put him (Grossman) and Steve Bartman away.”

When told that Jeff Garcia was a free agent, Hunter said, “Let’s go get ’em. I’d love to have Jeff Garcia.” Then he paused before saying, “How about this? You keep Jeff Garcia – we’ll take (Chicago native Donovan) McNabb.”

76ers coach Maurice Cheeks also grew up in Chicago and he agreed with Hunter’s statements. He called the game disappointing, then said, “I really thought he was throwing it out of bounds and then I realized it was a touchdown,” in reference to Grossman’s 4th quarter interception that was returned for a touchdown.

We always like it when people agree with us, but I guess we aren’t the only ones down on good old Rexy. I guess completely crapping the bed in a Super Bowl will do that for you.

To tell you the truth I had never really heard of Steven Hunter before I read this but now he’s one of my favorite players. I’m not even sure they make Steven Hunter Sixers jerseys but I’d now wear one with pride. Good for you Steven.

  3. Ever notice that “bruthas” never call a “brutha” out?Sounds like Hunter is a Honkey Hating machine….Grossman screwed up a few plays which definitely hurt Chicago….but you’ll never hear a guy like Hunter call out the ‘homeys on that Chicago D who were abused all day by Indianapolis….Grossman may never get much better – but it was his 1st year as a starter….it was the D that actually let the team down…wonder what he has to say about that…can’t see him calling out Tank Johnson now…can you? Especially when there is an undersized white-boy to blame….but let’s take a wild guess where he would go if he had to call out the D….maybe Brian UrlHONKEY? And 1 more thing…Go Ahead….TAKE MCNABB!

  4. Oh come on Vinnie, even you have to admit this story is great It’s just funny to see everyone piling on him. We thought that after the reaction to our post the other day this one would be funny.

Don’t take us so seriously, we just thought it was funny that some random bench guy from the 76ers was calling him out.

  5. Nah, it’s cool. I meant that comment more tongue-in-cheek. I put my real rebuttal (sorta-though-not-necessarily in direct response to you guys) on our blog last night.

The better question is whether Mr. Anonymous is being serious with his race rant. Seems awfully presumptious.
